RushRevisited Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 I finally picked up one of this band's DVDs (Live at Budokan) - EXCELLENT! They are extremely talented! Any suggestions on albums I should get/DVDs I should get?
madra sneachta Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 I asked the exact same question on CP in June - I'd never heard them before, but noticed the name coming up again and again so made some enquiries. I bought two albums, which were superb Metropolis 2 - Scenes from a Memory & Images and Words. Excellent stuff

RushRevisited Posted January 14, 2005 Author Posted January 14, 2005 What is weird is on their DVD/Video page, http://www.dreamtheater.net/disco_videography.php it doesn't even list this one that I got - Live in Budokan...

I borrowed my brother-in-laws' copy of "Images and Words" and have been listening all week in the truck! Never had the opportunity to hear them before. I had the same reaction... WOW! RushRevisited Posted January 14, 2005 Author Posted January 14, 2005 This drummer is awesome and so animated too! The dude is just INTO it man! You can tell he loves it.
RushRevisited Posted January 14, 2005 Author Posted January 14, 2005 And this keyboard player is unbelievable (obviously others must think so too, or they wouldn't dedicate a track to his keyboard solo) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/RushRevisited/DTkeyboard.jpg
Pags Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 I'm not a big DT fan, but I love Portnoy. The guy is astounding.
afansince74 Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 I can imagine RR! Some of these songs are just insane on the drums! You need to listen to this one too! I'll go see if I can find that DVD.

It may take a while to download, its 9 megs. http://www.therushforum.com/AV01132005_220145.mpg This is the DVD

hap Posted January 14, 2005 Posted January 14, 2005 Imo We must dinguish between 2 bands: The old Dream Theater, with Kevin Moore, who created a masterpiece called "Images & Words" The current Dream Theater,an average prog-metal band. P.s:Red Barchetta sung by LaBrie is awesome.
Room 34 Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 QUOTE (hap @ Jan 14 2005, 03:18 PM) Imo We must dinguish between 2 bands: The old Dream Theater, with Kevin Moore, who created a masterpiece called "Images & Words" The current Dream Theater,an average prog-metal band. P.s:Red Barchetta sung by LaBrie is awesome. Well, to each his own. I tried to get into the old DT stuff many years back and just didn't like it at all. By contrast, I LOVE their newer stuff, '97 onwards, and would highly recommend them to anyone who is into challenging music played by overwhelmingly talented musicians. That said, I have two big complaints: 1. James LaBrie seems like a decent guy and certainly has a passion for what he does, but I just really do not like his vocal style. (But the music is strong enough to appeal despite his vocals.) 2. There's at least one completely lame cheesefest ballad on every album. I literally find at least one track on almost every album completely unlistenable. But I LOVE the rest! BTW -- I saw these guys open for Yes a couple years back, and they played "Machine Messiah." Sweet!
The Rocinante Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 They're very good. Images and Words is awesome, so is Train of Thought, Awake, an 6DOIT. Scenes From a Memory? blech, I dislike that album. But hteir worst IMO is still Octavarium, which has one good song (title track)
Snowman Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 When Dream and Day Unite, Images & Words, Awake and Scenes from a Memory are my faves. If you love the Live at Budokan DVD you should definately grab the Score DVD.
Finbar Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Awake. A f*ckin' masterpiece. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/8/87/Dream_theater_awake.jpg/200px-Dream_theater_awake.jpg
prog.fusion Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 also, pick up the Live in Tokyo/Once in a Livetime DVD as especially the latter has a lot of rarer songs most casual fans aren't privvy too.
Tick Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 In case no one noticed, this is an old thread that tangy bumped. R.R. is a big Dream Theater fan, this thread had me scratching my head for a minute.
prog.fusion Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 last night for some reason, there was like, 3 threads i saw on DT on here.
